Lean and mean Jeng Tzan itching for first action in four months

KUALA LUMPUR: Discus thrower Yap Jeng Tzan is all excited about her first international outing in India after four months of mundane training at her second ‘home’ – Bukit Jalil.

The Negri Sembilan lass left for India yesterday for a two-week, three-city competition-cum-training stint in Cochin (Sunday), Coimbatore (May 8) and Chennai (May 13).

The lack of tournaments on the home front has whetted her appetite to compete in as many international tournaments as possible.

Ready to roll: National discus thrower Yap Jeng Tzan practising in Bukit Jalil on Wednesday. She left for a three-tournament stint in India yesterday.

The 22-year-old is the national record holder in women’s discus, setting the 46.60m mark at the Sukma (Malaysian Games) in Terengganu last year.

Since then, she has shed 5kg and is looking leaner and meaner as she works towards making an impact in this year’s Asian Track and Field (ATF) in Guangzhou in November and the Laos SEA Games in December.

Jeng Tzan describes the India trip as a perfect testing ground.

“I am really looking forward to this trip after the first international stint in Thailand was cancelled due to (political) problems there last month,” said Jeng Tzan.

“I have trained for so long at home and this competition will give me an idea as to where I stand (against other athletes).”

The bubbly Jeng Tzan hopes she would shape up well for the two major tournaments later this year.

“The ATF and SEA Games are very important to me. In athletics, good results at these levels are considered big achievements. And I am all fired up to do well,” said Jeng Tzan.

Two years ago, she was just a junior coming through the ranks and she did quite well to finish fifth at the Korat SEA Games.

With more experience and exposure, Jeng Tzan is set to be one of the medallists for the country at this year’s ATF and SEA Games.

The other athletes who left for India yesterday were M. Vadivellan (sprint), Adi Alifuddin Hussein (shot putt) and Mohd Zaiful Zainal Abidin (400m).
