Sprint king Bolt forced to undergo minor left foot operation

KINGSTON: Beijing Olympic star and sprint world record-holder Usain Bolt underwent a minor operation to his left foot after being involved in a car crash, his manager said on Thursday.

The 22-year-old Jamaican was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital where an operation on his foot was performed to remove embedded thorns upon which the World’s Fastest Man stepped after the accident on Wednesday, according to Bolt’s manager, Norman Peart.

“We are pleased to report that Usain Bolt is fine after his car accident,” Bolt’s agent, Ricky Simms, said in a statement. “He has been released from hospital and will have a few days rest as advised by the Jamaican Amateur Athletics Association’s doctor.

“The main injuries were to his left foot when he stepped on some thorns when getting out of the car.”

As a result, Bolt will miss today’s Jamaica International Invitational meet.

Peart said Bolt will be sidelined for at least a week before he is re-evaluated and Bolt coach Glen Mills wanted him not to compete this weekend protectively.

“We will continue to monitor his progress over the next few days,” Simms said.

“It’s too early to say if this will have any impact on his training and racing programme in the next few weeks.”

Bolt, who will not train for the next week, has his next scheduled race at the Manchester City Games on May 17.

Bolt set world records at 100m (9.69) and 200m (19.30) in winning gold at the Beijing Olympics and was part of the Jamaican 4x100m relay team to also break the world record in the final.

He walked away from the one-car crash when his 2009 BMW M3 swerved off a rain slick section off a highway near Kingston and overturned in a trench.

While the vehicle, a gift from his sponsors Puma was extensively damaged, Bolt and two female companions identified as Latoya Taylor, 20, and Venecia Crew, 19, all escaped serious injuries. — AFP
