Mickelson buoyant about wife’s cancer

LOS ANGELES: Phil Mickelson expressed optimism on Thursday about his wife Amy’s breast cancer, saying that doctors believed they had diagnosed the condition early.

“We have a wonderful team of doctors helping us and it is believed that we caught this early,” Mickelson said on his official website (
www.philmickelson.com).

“We are anxiously waiting for a number of test results that will help guide us in the best possible direction.”

The American world number two suspended his PGA Tour campaign indefinitely last week after his wife was diagnosed with cancer.

He had been scheduled to defend his title at this week’s Colonial Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas and his participation in next month’s US Open at Bethpage in New York is also in doubt.

“Amy is such a supportive and loving life partner,“ Mickelson, 38, said of his 37-year-old wife. “She has always put me and our family first. Now it’s time for her and her health to come first as we face this challenge together.”

Mickelson, a three-times major winner, added that he and his wife had been uplifted by the generous support they had received from PGA Tour players and their wives, and others around the world.

South African Rory Sabbatini wore a pink shirt in tribute to Amy Mickelson for Sunday’s final round of the Byron Nelson Championship in Irving, Texas, where he won by two shots.

“It is hard to describe how much the outpouring of support has meant to us,” left-hander Mickelson said.

“When we heard about the Tour Wives, PGA Tour and the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial organising the “Pink Out“, we both had tears rolling down our faces.
