Paddler Angeline picked to join training camp in China

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s Angeline Tang An Qi is among the three young paddlers from Asia picked to participate in the World HOPES training programme initiated by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).

The other two players selected are South Korea’s Park Jeong-woo and Thailand’s Khetkhuen.

ITTF launched the World HOPES search in March this year and invited all member countries to nominate qualified players for selection.

ITTF’s goal is to introduce the HOPES category (Under-12) alongside with the Cadet category (Under-15) to be integrated into the ITTF Junior Circuit (Under-18) event structure next year.

Players born in 1997 or after (Under-12) are invited to attend training camps and compete in the ITTF Junior Circuit.

Penang-born Angeline, who is the girls’ national Under-10 champion, was picked from a list of four nominees sent by Table Tennis Association of Malaysia (TTAM). The other nominees were Sarawak’s Clement Sim, Johor’s Liew Chee Xian and Negri Sembilan’s Boon Yu Jin.

Angeline will participate in the training camp in Chengdu next week.

If she performs well, she will earn another stint in Strasbourg, France, in August.

Meanwhile, Putrajaya made a sweep of both the boys’ Under-17 and Under-15 team titles in the Malaysia Youth Championships held in Kuala Lumpur by beating Sabah (3-2) and Johor (3-0) respectively.

Kedah won the girls’ Under-17 title by beating Kuala Lumpur 3-1 while the Under-15 title went to Johor after they beat Selangor 3-1.
