Jamshed working on Beng Hee’s game and fitness to ensure success
By AFTAR SINGH
KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 14 Ong Beng Hee can look forward to giving his best in the World Games and also the Malaysian Open squash championships with the help of Pakistani coach Jamshed Gul.
Beng Hee is seeded fourth in the World Games competition, which begins on Tuesday in Kaoshiung. And he is the seventh seed for the Malaysian Open schedule for July 27-Aug 1.
Jamshed guided Beng Hee to bag the Kuala Lumpur Open and Malaysian Open last year.
And the National Sports Council (NSC) secured the services of the 47-year-old coach again for two months to help Beng Hee after his failure to retain the KL Open in March.
Jamshed, who arrived here last month, said: “I am working on Beng Hee’s fitness and fine tuning his game. With proper guidance and training, I believe he can do well in both the World Games and the Malaysian Open.’’
The 29-year-old Beng Hee will open his campaign in the World Games against Yuta Fukui of Japan. He is in the same half of the draw as world No. 20 and fifth seed Stewart Boswell of Australia and world No. 12 and second seed James Willstrop of England.
Jamshed added that Beng Hee had defeated Boswell and Willstrop before and he could do it again.
“He needs to stay focus and play a consistent game to overcome these two players,’’ he said.
National No. 1 and world No. 13 Mohd Azlan Iskandar is seeded third in the World Games and he is in the same half of the draw as top seed and world No. 5 Nick Matthew of England.
In the Malaysian Open, Beng Hee will face team-mate Mohd Asyraf Azan in the first round. In the same half of the draw is world No. 9 and third seed Wael El Hindi of Egypt and second seed Matthew. Azlan is seeded sixth while world No. 4 Amr Shabana of Egypt is the top seed.
