Marbawi out to prove he still has it
By SHAMSHUL FITRI
KUALA LUMPUR: Mohd Marbawi Sulaiman is hogging the spotlight for the wrong reason – for being dropped from the elite archery squad to the third and fourth leg of the World Cup in Turkey and Shanghai respectively.
The third leg was held in June while the fourth leg is scheduled for Aug 4-9.
And he is determined to prove a point when he takes part in the upcoming Mini Olympic Games in Bukit Jalil from July 29-Aug 9.
Recently, the Beijing Olympian drew some flak after a dip in form which forced him down the pecking order in the men’s recurve team line-up behind Mohd Zulkifli Tahlil and Mohd Izzudin Abdul Aziz.
The duo will join Cheng Chu Sian and Wan Mohd Khalmizam Abdul Aziz for the Shanghai meet.
His last international tournament was the second leg of the Archery World Cup in Porec, Croatia, last May where he failed to clear the qualification round.
“It was a turning point in my life after being sidelined from the team, but I accepted it with an open heart. I know I was not chosen because of my form, not because of other reasons,” said he said yesterday.
Although he will not be going to Shanghai, Marbawi still trains with the national team.
“I want to compete in the Mini Olympic Games to gauge my performance,” he said.
The 26-year-old Marbawi added it is good to see youngsters like Zulkifli (22) and Izzudin (19) doing well despite their age as it creates a challenge for the others in the national archery squad.
“I believe both of them have yet to reach their peak but I am not worried. I am positive I can regain my place in the elite squad.”
