Chu Sian in record-breaking mood again

By SHAMSHUL FITRI

KUALA LUMPUR: It was another national record-breaking performance by archer Cheng Chu Sian in the men’s recurve competition in the third-leg of the Asian Grand Prix at the National Sports Council (NSC) complex in Taman Keramat here yesterday.

He recorded a total score of 1,336 after the 50m and 30m events, smashing the previous mark of 1,329 which he set at the World Cup series in Croatia in May.

It followed his record-breaking effort in the 90m event the previous day when he scored 322 points to erase Marbawi Sulaiman’s previous record of 321, which was set at the 2007 world championships in Leipzig, Germany.

However, Chu Sian only managed second place overall in the qualifying competition behind South Korean archer Jang Yong-ho, who scored 1,346.

“I am glad that I broke the national mark but my game was a bit off today, maybe due to the longer qualification rounds,” said the Bejing Olympian.

“But I will do my best for tomorrow’s event and hopefully reach the final.”

South Korea continued to dominate in the women’s recurve competition with Han In-sook leading on 1,349 followed by Jin Mi-yeong (1,347) and Lee Da-bin (1,341). Malaysia’s S. Anbarasi was placed fourth on 1,309.

In the men’s compound competition, Malaysia’s Lang Hon Keong continued to dominate with 1,371 points ahead of team-mates Frankie Ting (1,360) and Kelvin Hoo (1,355).

In the women’s category, Malaysia’s Fatin Norfatehah Mat Salleh was second on 1,348 – four points behind Singaporean Ho Yi Ling, who finished on 1,352.

All the Malaysian archers made it to the elimination rounds today to determine spots in the finals on Saturday.
