All that glitters for Sony is his wedding ring
A GLITTERING golden ring on Sony Dwi Kuncoro’s finger is expected to provide extra motivation for him at the World Championships.
The 25-year-old Sony ended his bachelorhood when he tied the knot with Gading Safitri on July 24.
“I promised her to do well in the world meet and this will certainly be an incentive for me to do well ,” said Sony.
Indonesia’s current top singles player emerged as the World Championships runner-up in Kuala Lumpur two years ago but has been going through a roller-coaster ride since then.
“My up-and-down performances is because of my injury (hamstring) but I am happy that the worst is over now,” said Sony.
Sony broke Malaysian hearts at the previous world meet when he crushed world number one Lee Chong Wei in the third round.
And chances are that he may take on top seed Chong Wei once again in the quarter-finals in Hyderabad.
“I defeated him when he was a world number one at a world meet before. I am hoping to achieve the same if I am to meet him again,” he said.
“But firstly, it is important not to lose focus in the early round matches,” said Sony, who defeated Michael Lahnsteiner of Austria 21-13, 21-9 in the opening round yesterday.
On losing his dear coach Hendrawan, Sony said: “It is normal to work under different coaches. I was with Joko Suprianto and now I am with Davis Ifraim. It is all about adapting.”
Hendrawan is currently coaching the men’s singles players in Malaysia.
Besides Sony, the other men’s singles players in the Indonesian team at the world meet are Simon Santoso and Taufik Hidayat.
