Hungary extend contract with Koeman
BUDAPEST: Hungary’s Football Federation announced on Wednesday they had extended the contract of national football coach Edwin Koeman by two years, as the team look ahead to qualifying for the 2012 European Championships.
“We have extended the contract until October 2011, which is the end of the qualifiers for the 2012 European championships,” federation spokesman Peter Serenyi said.
If Hungary qualify for Euro 2012 Koeman, who has trained the team since May 2008, will stay on as head coach until the end of the tournament.
Hungary are currently second behind Denmark in Group 1 of the qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and will next play qualifying matches against Sweden on Sept 5 and Portugal on Sept 9.
Koeman’s contract was extended because of the team’s solid results so far, and “to give some psychological support to the team prior to two decisive matches,” Serenyi said. — AFP
