Union slog to win national league title
PETALING JAYA: Despite having the services of Korat SEA Games women’s silver medallist Ng Sock Khim and Indonesian Budiarno, Keningau Lighting Home Deco (KLHD) had to settle for a runners-up finish behind Union in the Malaysia Table Tennis League Grand Finals at the Inti University College in Nilai on Sunday.
Union overcame KLHD 5-4 in a thrilling final that lasted four hours.
The tie went down to the wire and was only settled when Sock Khim-Ang Ting Yuan lost 8-11, 7-11, 10-12 to Tan Chin-Choo Sim Guan in the third doubles match.
Sock Khim, the national women’s singles champion, won the opening point, beating H’ng Kim Shan 11-7, 6-11, 11-6, 11-4. But Budiarno lost 7-11, 8-11, 11-5, 11-6, 8-11 to Tan Chin.
Union had edged Viva Mutiara, led by national men’s champion Mohd Shakirin Ibrahim, 5-2 while KLHD thrashed hosts Inti 5-0 in the semi-finals.
In the playoff for third place, Inti won 5-3.
