Mutu in charity plea
ROME: Fiorentina striker Adrian Mutu has offered to make a significant donation to charity if Chelsea let him off his €17mil fine for breach of contract after he tested positive for cocaine.
Mutu was fired by Chelsea after the positive test in 2004, not long after joining the Premier League club.
Earlier this year the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld the €17.17mil fine handed to Mutu by FIFA as a punishment for breaching his contract, but in a letter to FIFA president Sepp Blatter and Chelsea, Mutu claims he can’t afford it.
“I can’t pay that kind of money and it’s not a question of desire but one of understanding and rationale,” he said.
“I propose to make a significant donation to a charitable association in Florence or elsewhere that looks after children with problems related to substance abuse and to make another donation to a charity chosen by Chelsea in London or in England and the same in my country, Romania.” — AFP
