Four Malaysian through to semis in British Junior Open
KUALA LUMPUR: Four Malaysian players qualified for the semi-finals in two events of the British Junior Open squash championships in Sheffield with one place assured in the final of the boys’ Under-13 category.
Mohd Farez Izwan, the ninth-16th seed, created the biggest upset on Tuesday when he defeated second seed Youseff Ibrahim of Egypt 11-8, 11-8, 7-11, 11-8 in the quarter-finals.
The Sabahan will play against team-mate Ng Eain Yow for a place in the final. Eain Yow, the third-fourth seed, defeated another Egyptian Karim Desouky, 11-7, 11-4, 11-6 in the quarter-finals.
The other semi-final match will be between top seed Saad El Din Ihad of Egypt and New Zealand’s Scott Galloway.
In the girls’ Under-13 quarter-finals, fifth-eighth seed Andrea Lee also created an upset by coming back from a set down to beat second seed Elin Harlow of Wales 9-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-7 in the quarter-finals.
The Federal Territory player will play against fifth-eighth seed Salma Tarek of Egypt in the semi-finals.
The other semi-final is between another Malaysian S. Sivasangari and Egyptian Habiba Mohamad. Sivasangari advanced with an 8-11, 11-0, 11-8, 9-11, 11-8 win over Nadeen Kotb of Egypt.
Rachel Arnold bowed out in the girls’ Under-15 competition, losing 6-11, 9-11, 6-11 to second seed Salma Hani of Egypt in the quarter-finals.
The last Malaysian to win a title in the championships was Low Wee Wern in the girls’ Under-19 division in 2009.
