Raneem survives tough Brown test
Marching on: Raneem El Weleily will play Laura Massaro for a place in the US Open final. KUALA LUMPUR: Second seed Raneem El Weleily of Egypt warded off a strong challenge from Australia’s Kasey Brown to check into the semi-finals of the US Open squash championships in Philadelphia on Wednesday.
Raneem, who won 11-8, 11-13, 12-10, 11-9 in 47 minutes, will face fourth seed Laura Massaro of England for a place in the final.
Massaro, meanwhile, defeated Madeline Perry of Ireland 11-6, 11-9, 11-7.
World No. 1 Nicol David enjoyed a day’s rest and will take on Joelle King of New Zealand in the other semi-final.
In the men’s quarter-finals, Ramy Ashour of Egypt came back from a set down to beat Peter Barker of England 10-12, 11-5, 11-6, 7-11, 13-11.
Ashour will take on world champion and second seed Nick Matthew of England in the last four.
Matthew advanced into last four with a hard fought 11-6, 4-11, 10-12, 11-9, 11-9 victory over Amr Shabana in 92 minutes.
Top seed James Willstrop of England will be up against third seed Gregory Gaultier of France in the other semi-final.
