Aussie Jacobs wins Hawaii Ironman
Pete Jacobs celebrates after winning the 2012 Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. -EPA KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii: Australia's Pete Jacobs claimed the Ironman world championship title by beating Germany's Andreas Raelert by more than four minutes on Saturday.
The 31-year-old Jacobs completed the 2.4-mile ocean swim in Kailua Bay, 112-mile bike ride along the Kohala Coast and 26.2-mile run in eight hours, 18 minutes, 37 seconds.
Jacobs, who placed second last year, earned $120,000 in prize money.
Jacobs was second off bike, more than eight minutes behind Belgium's Marino Vanhoenacker, and passed Vanhoenacker with little more than 10 miles remaining in the marathon section.
Raelert, 36, posted his third top-three finish in four years. He finished in 8:23:40.
