Ridhwan shocks favourite Tuck Soon for Faldo Series lead
PETALING JAYA: Muhd Ridhwan stole the thunder from former Sukma (Malaysia Games) gold medallist Chan Tuck Soon with a one-under 71 to emerge as the leader of the boys’ division on the first day of the Faldo Series Malaysia championship at the Royal Selangor Golf Club yesterday.
Tuck Soon, who is under the national back-up programme, shot an even-par 72 while Mohd Wafiyuddin Abdul Manas was third with a 74. In the girls’ section, Hillferah Tan was the best finisher with a 72 for a three-stroke lead over Isza Fariza on 75.
Defending champion Nur Durriyah Damian was joint third on 77 with Genevieve Ling.
With only five tickets available (one for each category) for the Grand Finals, scheduled to be held in Mission Hills, China, next year, the competition will be keen amongst the 67 local golfers on display from the ages of 12-21 years old. The five categories are boys’ Under-21, Under-18 and Under-16and girls’ Under-16 and U-21.
The past winners of the Faldo Series tournament include Rory McIlroy and Tseng Yani Tseng, the current world No. 1s for men and women.
The Faldo Series was launched in 1996 with 35 tournaments in 25 countries. The Asia schedule features 17 tournaments in 13 countries.
