Girls galore
Umbrella girls are young women employed to shelter racers in professional motorcycle racing for years.
Before the start of a race, the riders have to pull up onto their grid and wait for all the other racers to take their places on the line. The riders stand on the grid until all pre-race checks, adjustments and fuelling have been completed and this can be uncomfortable. To ease the wait, sponsors hire models to hold umbrellas for the racers whenever they are in the sun. The girls are also typically used to advertise the sponsors’ team. Also known as promotional models, they are a sight to behold at the on-going Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit yesterday.
