Public come together to celebrate squash day
By KNG ZHENG GUAN
KUALA LUMPUR: It was a day of fun and a lot of squash as Malaysians came together to celebrate the World Squash Day at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil yesterday.
Jointly organised by SquashStars, the Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) and the Azlan Iskandar Squash Academy (AISA), the event saw social squash players from all ages turning up in full force.
This event was also a big boost for squash’s Olympics 2020 bid with 40,000 players from 750 squash clubs representing 72 nations from the Argentina to Zimbabwe participating in the memorable occasion yesterday. It was the first time the event was concurrently held world-wide.
The highlight was a match between two teams – Team Squash versus Team 2020 – with at least 20 players a side.
The objective was to win each individual match in a race to 20 points with the scores from both sides added towards the global score between Team Squash and Team 2020 in other countries.
In Malaysia, Team 2020 won 13-12 and at press time the global score was 646-601 in Team Squash’s favour.
Besides that, former national No. 1 Mohd Azlan Iskandar who retired from competing professionally last month, was on hand to conduct a coaching clinic for orphans.
