SEPANG: AirAsia-SIC-Ajo rider Zulfahmi Khairuddin created history for Malaysia by finishing second in a thrilling Moto 3 race of the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix at Sepang Circuit Sunday.
It was Zulfahmi's first ever career podium achievement and also the country's first in the World Motorcycle Championships.
Zulfahmi, who celebrated his 21st birthday on Saturday, could have won the race starting from pole position but was passed by German rider Sandro Cortese on the final turn.
Cortese denied the Malaysian victory at his home track to win the race and become the first Moto 3 world champion with two races to go.
Jonas Folger of Germany completed the rostrum.
The Moto 3 (250cc) replaces the 125cc category from this year and the second last event will take place in Phillip Island, Australia on Oc 28-29.
