Ten teams to take part in Borneo International Sevens
SANDAKAN: Ten teams, including five foreign sides, will compete in the two-day Borneo International Club Sevens Rugby Championships here on Saturday.
Organised by the Sandakan Rugby Club, the tournament will be held at the club’s premises and the Sandakan Sports Complex.
Organising chairman Velayuthan Tan, who is also Sabah Rugby Union and Sandakan Rugby Club president, said the presence of the five foreign teams would “heat up” the competition.
The five foreign teams are Sunny Bank, Nedlands and Palmyra Pirates of Australia; Massey RC of New Zealand; and 2010 defending champions Davetalevu of Fiji.
Tan said the presence of foreign teams would provide invaluable experience to local teams to compete at international level.
He said there would be three teams from Sabah – Sabah Eagles, Tawau Panthers and Borneo Eagles – and two teams from Kuala Lumpur – Cobra and DBKL Dragons.
The tournament began as a 10s tournament in 2001 before it was changed to a Sevens in 2009.
Tan said the championships would also feature an Under-16 category, which will be participated by six teams – SRU Academy, Sabah College, MSS Labuan, La Salle, SMK Pengiran and MRSM Tawau.
The tournament offers an overall prize of RM61,269 (US$20,000). — Bernama
