All four of our boys reach singles third round in Chiba
KUALA LUMPUR: It was a perfect day for Malaysia in the boys’ singles event when all four shuttlers, led by Soong Joo Ven, marched into the third round of the World Junior Championships individual competition in Chiba, Japan.
Joo Ven flexed his muscles for a 21-9, 21-12 win over Canadian Felix Deblois-Baeucage to set up a meeting with Taiwan’s Ting Hsu-jui today.
Three others – Choong Yee Han, Tan Kian Meng and Soo Teck Zhi – were also hardly tested in their early round matches yesterday.
Of the three, Kian Meng faces the toughest challenge as he will take on top seed and 2010 world junior champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark.
Axelsen, who has played in two back-to-back Super Series events in Denmark and France, still had enough energy to dispose of Man Tung Chun of Hong Kong 21-11, 21-17 in the second round.
Yee Han and Teck Zhi should clear their third round matches against Yugo Kobayashi of Japan and Mark Caljouw of Holland respectively.
In the girls’ singles, Malaysia’s Yap Rui Chen was the only casualty after losing 21-13, 18-21, 22-20 to Indonesian Hana Ramadhini in the second round.
Three others – Lim Yin Fun, Ho Yen Mei and Lim Chiew Sien – advanced into the third round but, being unseeded, are expected to be pushed to the limit when they take on seeded players Russia’s Evgeniya Kosetskaya (9th-16th), Bulgaria’s Stefani Stoeva (5th-8th) and South Korea’s Kim Hyo-min (9th-16th) respectively for places in the fourth round.
