Malaysian lawn bowls team on track for a clean sweep
PETALING JAYA: Hosts Malaysia are on course for a clean sweep in the 7th Asia Pacific Merdeka lawn bowls championships at the Bayuemas Indoor Bowls Stadium in Pandamaran, Klang, today.
The national players are in all four finals in the four disciplines – singles (men’s and women’s), mixed pairs and mixed four events.
Malaysia are assured of at least one title in the mixed fours events.
In the semi-finals yesterday, the team of Maisarah Aminludin, Noorhasani Daud, Ramble Dallan Rice Oxley and Mohd Syamil Shazwan Ramli edged India’s foursome 10-9 while the other Malaysian team – comprising Nabilah Mohktar, Noor Zafirah Mohd Noor, Fairul Izwan Abdul Muin and Muhd Azwan Shuhaimi – defeated the Philippines quartet 16-14.
Malaysia’s strongest team in the mixed fours event – Mohd Hizlee Abdul Rais, Mohd Saufi Rosli, Emma Firyana Saroji and Auni Fathiah Kamis fell in the quarter-finals – going down 9-8 to India.
Malaysia also have a finalist in each of the men’s and women’s singles finals. In the men’s final, Mohd Hizlee Abdul Rais will meet India’s Sunil Bahadur while Emma Firyana Saroji will face Australia’s Claire Duke in the women’s final.
In the mixed pairs final, Malaysia’s Fairul Izwan Abdul Muin and Nabila Mokhtar will take on India’s Farzana Khan and Krishna Xalxo.
Last year, Malaysia won two titles – through Noor Zafirah Mohd Noor (women’s singles) and Muhd Azwan Shuhaimi and Noor Zafirah (mixed pair).
