Nine-year-old Rayna reigns supreme at pre-junior meet

By ASHREENA PILLAI

KUALA LUMPUR: Federal Territory’s Rayna Hoh Khai Ling reigned supreme in the Grade One category of the National pre-Junior Circuit rhythmic gymnastics championships at Gymnasium 1 in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

After winning the ball, ribbon and rope events on Saturday, Rayna added the hoop title with a score of 8.533 points to clinch the all-around individual crown as well.

“I’m very happy ... I think I performed well. If I have to pick my favourite routine, it would probably be the rope because I really had a lot of fun with it,” said a beaming Rayna.

FT also claimed top honours in the Grade One team event as Rayna and her team-mates – Ong Jing Ru, Ng Xin Tung, Lor Qian Hui – accumulated a combined score of 99.799 to put second-placed Selangor (95.966) and third-placed Johor (85.182) in the shade.

The nine-year-old Rayna’s dedication to the sport and maturity in coming to terms with the high demands of gymnastics is really impressive, indeed.

She said that she did not have any immediate plans to celebrate her win and “will go straight into training again tomorrow”.

“The next thing I need to do is lose weight,” said Rayna in all seriousness.

Another FT gymnast, Wong Kay Lyn, can count herself lucky as her consistency and wins in the hoop and clubs events handed her the all-around individual title ahead of team-mates Koh Jei Yi and Long Su Zen in the Grade Two category.

“I was very nervous during the competition and didn’t perform as well as I would have liked to. I did a lot better last year, so I was a bit surprised – but very happy – to win the all-around title,” said Kay Lyn.

FT also won the team event in the Grade Two category with a combined score of 120.183, followed by Selangor with 111.016 and Malacca in third with 99.849.
