Veteran Beng Hee just no match for England’s Richards in US Open
PETALING JAYA: Veteran squash player Ong Beng Hee gave a much improved performance but it was still not enough to prevent his US Open quest from coming to an early end.
Perhaps the writing’s on the wall for the 32-year-old Beng Hee after his 6-11, 3-11, 12-10, 6-11 first round loss to England’s Tom Richards in Philadelphia on Sunday.
Beng Hee began impressively against a rival who is six years his junior but age eventually caught up with him.
Beng Hee had also been disappointing in the Malaysian Open last month, losing to Swiss star Nicolas Mueller in the first round.
“This was a much better performance but it just wasn’t good enough against Tom,” said Beng Hee when contacted.
Richards, who has enjoyed a fine year and is currently ranked 14th in the world, faces compatriot Peter Barker in the second round. The sixth-seeded Barker disposed of Canadian journeyman Shahier Razik 11-4, 11-6, 11-1.
In other matches, top seed James Wilstrop and second seed Nick Matthew, both of England, dropped a set each before safely booking theirs spot in the second round.
Wilstrop slogged for 80 minutes before prevailing 11-4, 11-3, 7-11, 11-9 against Botwana’s Alister Walker while Matthew overcame world No. 10 Omar Mosaad of Egypt 7-11, 11-7, 11-5, 11-9.
Malaysian Open champion Tarek Momen also had to fight back to beat Mueller 5-11, 11-7, 10-12, 12-10, 11-6.
Malaysia’s hopes will now solely rest on the women’s shoulders – world No. 1 Nicol David world No. 9 Low Wee Wern.
