Revington calls up six former players for Argentina tourney
KUALA LUMPUR: New national hockey coach Paul Revington has recalled six former internationals for training in preparation for the Champions Challenge I tournament in Quilmes, Argentina, from Nov 24-Dec 2.
The six are Ismail Abu, who was dropped from the national team three years ago for indiscipline, Chua Boon Huat, Mohd Sallehin Abdul Ghani, Mohd Amin Rahim and the Mohan brothers of Jiwa and Jivan.
Amin, who quit after the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in July, has agreed to come out of retirement. Thirty players have been called up for training while eight are on standby.
Mohd Izzat Mohd Rahim and Azreen Rizal Nasir, who featured in Olympic qualifier in Dublin in March, have been demoted to the standy list.
One former international who did not make the training squad was influential defender Ahmad Kazamirul Nasruddin of KL Hockey Club (KLHC).
Revington said that the players were selected based on their performances in the MHL.
“I have recalled six ex-internationals because I believe they are still the best players in the league. I did not recall Kazamirul because I don’t think he is good enough,” explained the South African. “However, no one can take his place in the training squad for granted.”
Besides the tournament in Argentina, Malaysia will also feature in the second Asian Champions Trophy in Doha from Dec 21-27. The national side start training in Kuantan this Friday.
