Aaliyah pips sis Phillipa to tricks gold medal
PETALING JAYA: Indonesia SEA Games gold medallist Aaliyah Yoong Hanifah maintained her winning form when she edged sister Phillipa Yoong in the tricks category of the Malaysian Waterski and Wakeboard International at Putrajaya last weekend.
Nine-year-old Aaliyah won with 2,230 points after Phillipa fell on her first pass to settle for 2,050 points.
Phillipa also suffered her first loss in women’s slalom in two years when she came up against European Under-21 star Sara Westerlund of Sweden.
Singapore’s Melanie Jane won the women’s category while Thai star Padiwat “Bomb” Jaemjan took the men’s title in the Open Wakeboard discipline.
The event also saw two 11-year-old Malaysian trick skiers making their tournament debut.
Arianna Chow and Nurulanis Mohamed Isa, who only recently started training regularly in Putrajaya, did well in the Under-12 tricks event by finishing second and third respectively to Indonesia’s Aldisa Wangka.
Arianna also won the Novice Wakeboard event against Owen Huish of Britain, Angelina Christian of Singapore and Karen De Lacy of New Zealand.
