Perak show title potential with victory over Terengganu
By AFTAR SINGH
SEREMBAN: In-form Perak came back from a goal down to upset last year’s finalists Terengganu 2-1 for their third consecutive win in the National Under-14 hockey tournament at the Seremban II Stadium yesterday.
Perak, who finished third last year, have been in impressive form and had earlier defeated Negri Sembilan (3-1) and Kedah (3-0).
Terengganu drew first blood in the eighth minute off a penalty corner taken by Ahmad Farhan Daniel Shaharuddin.
But Perak needed only 11 minutes to get back on level terms when skipper Syed Mohd Syakir Syed Cholam struck from close range.
It was all Perak from then on. And despite missing a number of chances, Syed Mohd Syakir was on target again when he scored the winner in the 60th minute off a penalty corner flick which sailed past Terengganu goalkeeper Mohd NurFirdaus Mat Rafli.
Perak’s remaining matches are against Sabah, Malacca and Penang.
In another Group B tie, Penang turned on the heat in the second-half to outplay Sabah 6-2. It was Penang’s second win as they had beaten Kedah 3-1 on Friday.
Mohd Aiman Asyraff Mansor set the ball rolling with a penalty corner goal in the 11th minute. Four minutes later, Sabah equalised through Shello Silverius but Penang regained the lead in the 19th through Afif Haikal Mohd Azhar.
Sabah levelled again when Shello scored in the 22nd. Penang took total control of the game after the breather and scored through Mohd Azim Ilias (42nd), Tengku Ariff Haikal Tengku Nor Kamarul Haizan (57th),Mohd Safirul Sazali (66th) and Mohd Farhan Rozi (69th) to win comfortably.
In Group A, Selangor bounced back from their opening day defeat to defending champions Kuala Lumpur to beat Johor 3-1.
Johor took the lead through Mohd Amirul Hanis Abdul Aziz but Selangor hit back with goals from Mohd Asyraff Nazri (47th), Faiq Razin Zariq Idris (50th) and Mohd Faisol Rozihan (67th).
The other Group A tie between Kelantan and Pahang ended 0-0.
