Title in the bag but Syafiq and James are not relaxing
By Shamshul Fitri
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Super Series (MSS) overall title is already in the bag but Proton R3 Motorsports duo Syafiq Ali and James Veerapan have no intention of taking their foot off the pedal in the final round at the Sepang International Circuit this weekend.
The duo, powering the Proton Satria Neo, have an unassailable lead in the Touring Car class with 135 points after four rounds.
Soh Kee Koon is second with 65 points in a Toyota Altis while Kok Pak Chiang-Sutan Mustaffa (Proton Gen 2) are third on 64.
“We will continue to push hard and go all the way for another victory. We owe it to the team and our sponsors,” said James.
Proton R3 Motorsports’ record in the class was perfect this season until Round Four on Sept 16 when they missed out on a win.
“We were very unfortunate to finish fourth in the last round. We definitely want to avenge that loss and conclude the season in style,” said James.
While the battle for the overall crown is already done and dusted, the battle for second place is still wide open.
Former MSS Supersaloon champion and winner of the inaugural S1K race in 2009, Kee Koon leads the tussle for second against Pak Chiang and Sutan by a single point.
The combination of Ahmad Faizry and Juzaili Jasmay (Proton Satria Neo) are four points further on 60.
For the final round this weekend, there will be two 10-lap races on the 5.543km circuit. Free practices and qualifying rounds for all classes will be held tomorrow.
