Japan’s Kiyonari wins SuperSports 600cc title
QATAR: Japan’s Ryuichi Kiyonari clinched the Petronas Asia Road Racing Championships (ARRC) SuperSports 600cc title in stunning fashion.
The 30-year-old Musashi Boon Siew Honda Racing rider was in superb form at the Losail International Circuit in Qatar and stamped his mark by winning Race 2.
Kiyonari had finished second in Race 1 behind Malaysia’s Mohd Zamri Baba.
But the sensational win in Race 2 was enough to win him the title with a total of 231 points, five ahead of his Manual Tech BEET Kawasaki rival and compatriot Katsuaki Fujiwara.
Mohd Zamri Baba did Malaysia proud to defend the third overall position with 197 points.
Despite starting the race from the second row, Kiyonari delivered a textbook ride to catch up with team-mate Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman and Zamri in Race 2.
The three riders went toe-to-toe in the early part of the race before Kiyonari and Azlan pulled away from Zamri in lap seven.
Azlan then played his part in allowing his Japanese team-mate to win in 31:46.882.
