National triple jumper Noor Amira struck by the varsity Games curse again

I’ve trained really hard and was in high spirit to better my national record of 13.90m. - NOOR AMIRA MOHD NAFIAH KUALA LUMPUR: National triple jumper Noor Amira Mohd Nafiah has been ruled out of next week’s Asean University Games in Laos with a heel injury.
This is the second time she has had to skip the Games. The Perak athlete missed the last edition in Ho Chi Minh City two years ago after fracturing her shin during training.
The 23-year-old injured her heel during training last week, thus forcing her to skip the Dec 12-20 Games.
This means she will not get another chance to feature in the Games as she is expected to graduate with a degree in nutrition from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) next June.
Noor Amira said that the MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) test at a private hospital yesterday revealed a hairline fracture on her heel.
“The doctor has advised me not to compete in the Games ... I could risk aggravating the injury and it will take longer to heal,” said Noor Amira, who was supposed to feature in four events in Laos.
“I’m sad that I will not get another chance to feature in the Asean University Games because I will graduate next year.”
Besides the triple jump, she was down to compete in the long jump, 100m and 4x100m.
“I’m really disappointed at missing my second Asean University Games. I’ve trained really hard and was in high spirit to better my national record of 13.90m (set in the Malaysian Open in October),” said Noor Amira, who shattered the previous record of 13.74m set by Ngew Sin Mei in 2004.
“My aim in Laos was to clear the 14-metre barrier and qualify for next year’s SEA Games in Myanmar. But the injury has dashed my hopes.”
Noor Amira, who is trained by Russian coach Viktor Sotnikov, made her debut in the Asean University Games in Kuala Lumpur in 2008 – winning the silver in triple jump and bronze in long jump.
Noor Amira said that she has to wear a special shoe to protect her heel and expects to return to training in February.
