PARIS - Australian sailor Peter Gilmour (pic), a veteran of five America's Cups announced on Wednesday that the ongoing Monsoon Cup in Malaysia will be his last event as he calls time on a glittering career at the age of 52.

"It would be fabulous to finish my career with a win here but the Monsoon Cup is always very tight, it goes down to the wire each day." he said at a press conference for the World Match Racing Tour's final event of the season.

"I just realised that I've got to that point in my life. I'm not as athletic as I used to be and I used to win one or two events per year and we haven't won an event for a few years now.

"The other teams aren't necessarily getting that much better, I'm probably just slipping a bit. It's good to finish while I'm still at the pinnacle of the sport."

A Perth native, he began sailing as the age of seven and competed in his first world championships at only 16, finishing a respectable 21st.

He took part in his first America's Cup in Perth in 1987 but was unable to lead the Kookaburra syndicate to victory and was beaten by Dennis Conner's Stars and Stripes 87 in the first edition of the event to take place outside the United States.

He won four match racing world titles and finally ended up on the winning America's Cup team in 2007 when he coached the Swiss Alinghi team to victory over Team New Zealand in Valencia. - AFP
