Bolt sneaks into Germany to meet controversial doctor

LONDON: Usain Bolt has made an unexpected visit to one of Europe’s most controversial doctors in a 10,000-mile round trip that interrupted his preparations for the London Olympics.

The revelation comes after the fastest man in the world pulled out of his scheduled first race of the season in Kingston, Jamaica, last Saturday.

It is learned that Bolt instead secretly visited the expensive Munich clinic of Hans Muller-Wohlfahrt, the unorthodox doctor who regularly injects patients with calf’s blood.

Sources within Bolt’s Jamaican training group, the Racers Track Club, claim the Olympic champion is suffering from a niggling leg complaint.

He was born with a curvature of the spine and missed the end of the 2010 season with a back injury that was treated by Muller-Wohlfahrt.

But Bolt’s agent, Ricky Simms, said on Monday: “People can put two and two together and make five. Any speculation is ridiculous.

“He was in Europe doing work for a sponsor – a great opportunity that will become clear in due course – and called in for a regular check-up in Munich.

“He is not injured. He trained fully up to leaving Jamaica and is training fully again.”

Nonetheless, questions will be raised about why he did not arrange his sponsor appointment around his competition schedule.

His management – Simms, his publicist Carole Beckford, best friend Nugent Walker and coach Glen Mills – keep a tight grip on his diary.

Just last week they turned down all interview requests, citing the importance of focusing on his first race of 2012 – the one he missed.

Bolt even talked of being “excited to begin my season”.

Despite his unusual injections being criticised as a ‘Frankenstein-type experiment’ by the head of the US Anti-Doping Agency, Muller-Wohlfahrt is a favourite of top athletes struggling with debilitating injuries.

Paula Radcliffe, Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard, Ronaldo and Boris Becker have all been patients.

To his admirers, the 69-year-old is affectionately known as ‘Healing Hans’. — Agencies
