Asia’s John Daly of golf ready to let it rip in Malaysia
KIRADECH Aphibarnrat is called Asia’s John Daly of golf not just for his big physique but also for his attacking style of play.
And the burly Thai, who had tipped the scales at 110kg before shedding some of his weight away, is ready to let it rip at the Maybank Malaysian Open starting at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club today.
But Kiradech is aware he must overcome his nerves if he is to realise any chance of improving on his third place in 2010, his best finish at the Malaysian Open so far.
Kiradech is aware of the quality of the field for the US$2.5mil tournament with the likes of Major winners Martin Kaymer of Germany and South African duo Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel in the fray.
“The field is strong and there’s pressure to be playing with these top players. It will be difficult to defeat them but it will be challenging. I feel a bit nervous but I’ll try to do my best,” said Kiradech, who has won once on the Asian Tour and is one of the exciting Asian players to watch in action.
The 22-year-old Kiradech, who is a two–time world junior champion, enjoys playing in Malaysia.
“I always love coming to Malaysia. It feels like home here,” he said, adding he has been working hard to improve on his fitness for the new season.
“I have been working out at the gym for the last two years. Previously, I never did any running or jogging at all! I’m starting to work out more this year and I feel my body is getting stronger.
“It makes a lot of difference especially with this type of weather in Asia. I make sure I work out about one and a half hours and four days a week.”
