Zhi Yun tames Xiao Ying to brighten hopes of a place in the last eight
PETALING JAYA: Pahang shuttler Lai Xiao Ying blew a good chance to make the quarter-finals of the 100Plus National Junior Circuit Grand Prix Finals by losing to Johor’s Lim Zhi Yun at the Juara Stadium yesterday..
Xiao Ying, who beat Kedah’s Nur Aiffa Tajeri in the opening girls’ Under-18 Group C match on Wednesday, played poorly against Zhi Yun and lost 8-21, 15-21.
Aiffa, who both legs of the National GP Circuit, now has a golden opportunity to make amends for her uninspiring start. She only needs to beat Zhi Yun today to make the last eight.
The hot favourites for the title, BJSS duo Lim Yin Fun and Lim Chiew Sien, will only be in action today but should progress to the quarter-finals without any problem.
In the boy’ division, overwhelming favourite Soong Joo Ven and Soo Teck Zhi should also confirm their quarter-final spots today.
In the Under-16 division, Zulhelmi Zulkifli, the younger brother of reigning Asian and World junior champion Zulfadli, began his campaign with a hard-fought victory over Selangor’s Gwee Kang Yi.
The Kuala Lumpur lad had to dig deep to win 9-21, 22-20, 21-11.
He now faces Tan Jinn Hwa of BJSS with the winner advancing to the quarter-finals.
