Simon tames Pengyu to bag Indonesian Open
PETALING JAYA: Indonesia’s No. 1 shuttler Simon Santoso gave himself a much needed boost ahead of the London Olympics by bagging the Indonesian Open Super Series Premier men’s crown in Jakarta yesterday.
Simon, whose last title was the Taiwan Open two years ago, gave the home fans much to cheer by beating China’s Du Pengyu 21-18, 13-21, 21-11.
But there was no double joy as veteran Thai mixed pair Sudket Prapakamol-Saralee Thoungthongkorn picked up their second title on the trot by beating home favourites Tontowi Ahmad-Liliyana Natsir 21-17, 17-21, 21-13.
The Thai world No. 9 pair had won the Thailand Open GP Gold last week.
In the men’s doubles, All-England champions Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung battled past third seeds Carsten Morgensen-Mathias Boe 23-21, 19-21, 21-11.
It was the Korean pair’s second title of the year and they appear to be peaking nicely ahead of the Olympics.
India’s Saina Nehwal upset the formbook to beat the in-form Li Xuerui of China 13-21, 22-20, 21-19 for the women’s singles title.
