Joo Ven and Yin Fun live up to top billing in Junior GP Finals
By KNG ZHENG GUAN
PETALING JAYA: Soong Joo Ven and Lim Yin Fun lived up to their top billing by capturing the boys’ and girls’ Under-18 singles titles at the 100Plus National Junior Circuit Grand Finals at the Juara Stadium yesterday.
It was a major boost for the BJSS trainees ahead of the Asian Junior Championships in Gimcheon, South Korea, from June 30-July 7 and the Sukma from July 7-16.
The talented Joo Ven defeated BJSS team-mate Soo Teck Zhi 27-25, 15-21, 21-13 while Yin Fun overcame Lim Chiew Sien 17-21, 21-19, 21-14.
“Now with one title in the bag, I hope to win two more by the middle of July,” said a delighted Joo Ven, who is still eligible for junior tournaments next year. Teck Zhi pushed me hard but I was confident of winning.
“The match went into a decider because we know each other’s game so well and it was a struggle at the end.”
Yin Fun also gave due credit to her opponent, who is also her sparing partner, for giving her a good fight. “We know each other’s game as we train under (Wong) Mew Choo almost every day. We are quite close and that makes it harder,” said Yin Fun.
Former women’s national No. 1 Mew Choo had more reason to celebrate as another of her trainees, Ho Yen Mei, defeated Yap Rui Chen 18-21, 30-29, 21-15 in the girls’ Under-16 final.
In the boys’ Under-18 doubles final, Darren Issac-Tai An Khang overcame favourites Calvin Ong-Tan Wee Gleen 21-14, 21-19.
