Special fund mulled for promising golfers
PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Youth and Sports have taken a number of initiatives to unearth talented young golfers and develop the golf industry in the country.
Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said among efforts in the pipeline was to offer scholarship to potential young golfers to pursue their higher education and their golf game.
“I want to explore the possibility of setting up a special fund that can be sustainable and not depend on the Government alone for funds,” he said after witnessing the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the ministry and Golf House Academy (GHA) here yesterday.
For example, in the United States, if a student is offered to become a golf professional, the player would be given US$2.5mil (RM7.75mil) from a special fund and the player would contribute to the fund in the future when he starts earning from the game, he said.
Ahmad Shabery said discussions would be held with Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional (PTPTN) to explore the initiative of developing any sport from among university students.
He said discussions would be held to explore the possibility of turning PTPTN loans to full scholarship or repay half the loan amount, for students who excelled in sports.
“We want to encourage students to excel in sports as well because it will be the beginning chapter towards building a strong nation in sports,” he said.
The MoU inked yesterday would be the beginning of a “Junior Swing” programme for students aged between 10 and 15, in Selangor, Kedah, Perlis and Melaka.
