Weightlifters Mubin and Frenceay named best athletes
WEIGHTLIFTERS Abdul Mubin Rahim and Frenceay Titus were named the 15th Malaysia Games’ (Sukma) best sportsman and sportswoman respectively last night.
The two athletes received their trophies from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who also officiated the closing ceremony at the Darul Makmur Stadium.
Najib kicked off the ceremony by cycling around the stadium track with Sports Minister Datuk Seri Shabery Cheek and Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob in tow.
The capacity crowd were later entertained by a vibrant drum show and a performance by Malaysia’s pop queen Datuk Siti Nurhaliza.
Sabahan Frenceay bagged two gold medals and rewrote her own national record of 80kg in the snatch 58kg with a lift of 81kg.
However, in the clean and jerk event, she only managed a lift of 95kg to set a new meet record.
The finest: Terengganu’s Abdul Mubin Rahim and Sabah’s Frenceay Titus with their trophies after being named the Best Sportsman and Sportswoman respectively. Terengganu’s Mubin bettered the national record of 170kg in the men’s 77kg clean and jerk with a lift of 171kg.
In the snatch event, he lifted 128kg to better the old meet record of 127kg but missed out on the national record of 136kg.
Frenceay said she was honoured to be named the best sportswoman.
“I was disappointed not to break the national clean and jerk record as it was my target to break two national records here,” said Frenceay, who competed in her third Sukma.
“But being named the best sportswoman is a huge honour. This award will motivate me to do better for my country.”
Both Mubin and Frenceay also took home RM1,000 each.
