Jazeman hopes to deliver in Nurburgring
By LIM TEIK HUAT
PETALING JAYA: Jazeman Jaafar is hoping to deliver Hari Raya cheer on the track for Malaysia when he gets behind the wheel of his F3 car in the fifth round of the Formula 3 Euro Series in Nurburgring, Germany, this weekend.
Jazeman, who is based in London under Petronas support, is racing to “bridge” the long gap between British F3 rounds, with the next event not being held until the second week of September.
“The best way to maintain race fitness is to keep racing, so I’ve taken the opportunity to participate as an ‘invitation’ driver at Nurburgring,” he said yesterday.
“I will be racing in my British F3 car but we will be running on Hankook tyres rather than the Cooper tyres we use for the British F3.
Jazeman Jaafar “The car does handle differently depending on the tyres we use and it’s a good experience for me to work with my engineers to develop the set-up to best suit the tyres and the track conditions.
“As I’m not doing the whole calendar of Euro F3 events, I don’t have the pressure of racing for a championship title and this gives me the opportunity to take a different approach towards the race.
“I love racing, so I’m very happy to have another weekend in the cockpit and be out on the track pitting myself against the best F3 drivers in Europe.
“It’s Hari Raya but I think I am getting used to it. It’s definitely not my first. I remember back in 2010 when Fairuz (Fauzy) and I had to attend the Italian Grand Prix during Hari Raya.
”He was with Team Lotus then and I was with Mercedes GP for Petronas duties. I ate cereals for Hari Raya ... boy that was tough.”
The Formula 3 Euro Series event at Nurburgring shares the bill with the popular DTM German Touring Cars series.
The first race takes place this morning, followed by the second in the afternoon.
The final race of the weekend will be tomorrow morning.
