Rugby: Flawless Smit kicks Cheetahs to victory
JOHANNESBURG: Wing Riaan Smit kicked 19 points as Free State Cheetahs defeated Blue Bulls 32-18 Friday in a South African Currie Cup second round match.
Smit proved a flawless place kicker for the second consecutive week, slotting five penalties and two conversions between the posts on a cool night in central city Bloemfontein.
Playing at fly-half last weekend against title holders Golden Lions, Smit succeeded with all four kicks at goal and his combined 29-point haul places him second behind 33-point Bulls pivot Louis Fouche among the leading scorers.
Fouche managed just eight points against the Cheetahs from two penalties and the conversion of the first of two tries from No 8 CJ Stander, who is heading to former
European champions Munster this year.
Cheetahs got off to the perfect start with lock Andries Ferreira scoring a 45-second try and another from flank Kabamba Floors at the end of the half gave the home team a 23-10 half-time advantage.
A Fouche penalty five minutes after the restart cut the deficit to 10 points, but that was the closest a depleted Bulls team, with their stars on Springbok Rugby Championship duty, came to catching the Cheetahs. - AFP
