Dragons to hold open trials to bolster squad
PETALING JAYA: The Westports Malaysian Dragons will hold open trials to bolster their squad for the Malaysian National Basketball League (MNBL) after a disappointing finish in the Asean Basketball League (ABL) in June.
The Dragons got off to a bright start in the ABL but faded away midway into the season. They bounced back to make the playoffs before eventually losing to San Miguel Beermen in the semi-finals.
Now, the Dragons are actively seeking to strengthen the squad for the MNBL, which starts in mid-October, by conducting public tryouts.
“There is a pool of talent out there with lots of potential that we have yet to discover,” said Dragons technical advisor Goh Cheng Huat.
“We’ve seen a lot of talented players and this is an opportunity for them to step up and show us that they have what it takes to play basketball at a professional level.”
The trials will be held at the Bukit Kiara Equestrian & Country Resort basketball court from Sept 7-9 and is open to Malaysians and non-Malaysians aged between 16 and 33. Those who impress the selectors will be offered part-time contracts, with the possibility of staying on to compete in next year’s ABL.
