Another top-five finish for Hafizh
PETALING JAYA: Young Malaysian rider Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah of team Petronas Raceline Malaysia scored another top-five finish in the CEV Buckler Spanish Championships in Albecete on Sunday.
Banking on the new reinforced chassis for the penultimate round of the championships, the 20-year-old started from third row in eighth spot for the 19-lap Moto2 race.
Despite failing to better his previous results at the Albacete track in July when he finished fourth, Hafizh’s fifth placing on Sunday was enough to see him secure the Best Privateer (non-GP rider) award for the race.
The Petronas Raceline rider managed to stay with the frontrunners for a few laps before gradually losing touch with the leading pack in the seventh lap.
Hafizh eventually won the battle in the second group to finish in 29:31.623.
Spaniard Jordi Torres (JHK T-shirt Laglisse) won the race in 29:15.742 ahead of Daniel Rivas (TSR Galicia School) in 29:23.282. Roman Ramos (Motorrad Competicion), who was the winner at the track in July, was third in 29:23.857.
“It has been a really tough weekend. Despite our hard work, we still haven’t achieved the optimum set-up for the chassis,” said Hafizh.
“However, I was surprised that I managed to do 11 laps below the 1:33 mark even though there are still issues with the machine. The heat did not bother me much this time though.”
With one more round to go in the championship, Hafizh is sixth in the overall standings with 55 points but he leads the CEV Moto2 Privateer Cup with 108 points. Santiago Vega Hernandez of Halcourier MS is second with 90 points.
Championship leader Torres holds the top spot with 110 points, followed by Ramos (97) and PL Racing Moto2’s American rider Kenny Noyes third (76).
The final round of the championships will be held in Valencia on Nov 17-18.
