CIMB Malaysian Open: Wee Wern shocks Duncalf to enter semis

PETALING JAYA: National No. 2 Low Wee Wern booked her first ever semi-final appearance at the CIMB Malaysian Open squash championships after producing a stunning display to beat third seed Jenny Duncalf of England at The Curve, Mutiara Damansara here Thursday.
Wee Wern, who was elevated to world No. 10 this month, has been in tremendous form all week. She beat world No. 5 Madeline Perry on Wednesday, and dominated Duncalf, the world No. 4, from the start to win 11-7, 11-5, 11-8.
She will face Egypt's Raneem El Weleily in the semi-finals Friday.
World No. 2 Weleily defeated the in-form Alison Waters 12-10, 5-11, 11-6, 11-3 in an earlier match.
Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan, however, failed to join Wee Wern in the semi-finals as his heroic effort to beat fourth seed Adrian Grant in the first round a day earlier appeared to take its toll on him.
Nafiizwan lost to 2010 Malaysian Open runner-up Tarek Momen 8-11, 4-11, 13-11, 4-11 in 40 minutes.
The speedy Egyptian will next face either compatriot Karim Darwish or Spain's Borja Golan for a place in Saturday's final.
Meanwhile, world No.1 Nicol David, who is gunning for her eighth straight title, also made the last four but it was far from smooth sailing as Hong Kong's Annie Au gave her a mighty scare.
Nicol was forced to dig deep into her reserves before overcoming the resilient Au 6-11, 11-5,15-13, 11-5 in 46 minutes.
"It was indeed not the most smooth sailing tournament I've been in but I just had to bring up my tempo in the match," said Nicol.
"But it's just proof of how hard the other girls are training because this tournament is just like any other and everybody wants to win it as well," said Nicol.
