Unseeded pair’s gallant run comes to an end in the final
KUALA LUMPUR: Although Chua Khek Wei-Joyce Choong Wi Chi’s gallant run at the Maybank Malaysia International Youth Under-19 badminton championships ended in defeat, the pair can hold their heads high.
The unseeded pair put up a brave fight before going down to reigning Asian Junior champions Choi Sol-Kuy-Chae Yoo-jung 21-18, 16-21, 12-21 in the mixed doubles final at Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara yesterday.
Khek Wei believes it was the lack of patience and experience that let them down.
“It’s quite disappointing not to win. We started off well and won the first game. But then we got impatient and wanted to kill off the points too quickly,” said Khek Wei.
Hard shot: Chua Khek Wei returning a shot during the mixed doubles final as his partner Joyce Choong Wi Chi looks on during the Maybank Malaysia International Youth U-19 badminton championship at Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara yesterday. “We never really trained as a pair before the tournament as we were involved in the men’s and women’s doubles,” added the 16-year-old shuttler.
Reaching the final is indeed an achievement for the duo as it is only their third time competing together since pairing up in March.
They now hope that their good run in the tournament will be rewarded with a spot in the mixed doubles event at the World Junior Championships in Chiba, Japan from Oct 25-Nov 3.
“We haven’t heard anything yet from our coaches but we hope we get a chance to compete at the World Juniors next month,” he said.
Meanwhile, South Korea’s Sol-kyu, capped a great run in the tournament by winning the men’s singles title as well.
He beat Thai third seed Sitthikom Thammasin 21-12, 21-16 in the final.
South Korea’s Lee Min-ji beat compatriot Kim Hyo-min 21-19, 20-22, 21-17 to take the women’s singles title while Indonesian pair Arya Maulana Adiartama-Edi Subaktiar and Lee Sun-min-Shin Seung-chan of South Korea won the men’s and women’s doubles titles respectively.
