Top seeds Chan-Goh hope to come good in Japan Open
KUALA LUMPUR: National mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying will be out to make amends when they compete in the Japan Open from Sept 18 to 23.
The pair, currently ranked No. 8, were sent crashing out of the China Masters by top seeds Xu Chen-Ma Jin 21-18, 15-21, 21-11 in the semi-finals yesterday.
And they could very well come good in the Japan Open as the opposition will be much weaker due to a political problem.
China have threatened to pull their players out of the meet because of the dispute with Japan over the sovereignty of Senkaku Islands, also known as Diaoyu, in China.
The withdrawal of China’s top players may take the shine of the Open but it will present Peng Soon and Liu Ying with the perfect opportunity to stamp their mark as a top mixed doubles pair.
The due are the top seeds and have a first round bye and may most likely face sixth seeds Songphon Anugritayawon-Kunchala Voravichitchaikul of Thailand in last eight. And if they get through, their likely opponents should be Shoji Sato-Shizuka Matsuo of Japan.
Meanwhile, in the men’s singles final of the China Masters, top seed Chen Long comfortably beat Hu Yun of Hong Kong 21-11, 21-13 to land his first major title of the year.
The world No. 3 needed only 40 minutes to dispose of his unseeded opponent to retain the title he won last year.
As expected, it was a clean sweep for China in the other events.
China’s world No. 1 mixed doubles pair Xu Chen-Ma Jin continued their dominance as they beat compatriots Qiu Zihan-Tang Jinhua 14-21, 21-11, 21-10 for victory while Wang Yihan defeated team-mate Jiang Yanjiao 21-18, 21-14 to win the women’s singles.
Unseeded Chai Biao-Zhang Nan and top seeds Bao Yixin-Zhong Qianxin took the men’s and women’s doubles titles respectively.
