Hockey team to play in Champs Trophy tourney in Doha
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) have decided that they will send a team to the Asian Champions Trophy although it will be held during the Christmas period. The tournament will be in Doha from Dec 21-27 with the top six teams in Asia taking part.
MHC president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah said the make up of the team would be decided later but they are committed to taking part in the tournament.
He said this after a four-hour council meeting yesterday.
Tengku Abdullah said new national coach Paul Revington is on a scouting mission to select the players and the squad would be finalised after the Razak Cup next month.
“The plan is to have a pool of 30 players but those who are in the Project 2013 team will be left alone,” he said.
“The team will also play in the FIH Champions Challenge in Argentina in November. The target in the Champions Challenge is to improve on the fifth placing we achieved last year.”
Tengku Abdullah also announced that he will seek a seat on the FIH executive board.
The FIH Congress will be held in Kuala Lumpur from Oct 30-Nov 3.
“I have already filed my nomination paper and hope there will be enough support to win,” he said.
