Terengganu tops again in Cycling GP
PETALING JAYA: Terengganu maintained their stranglehold on the National Cycling Grand Prix as Mohd Saiful Anuar Aziz grabbed the third leg in Kuching yesterday. The rider from professional outfit Terengganu Cycling Team broke free from the five-man breakaway group of team-mate Mohd Nor Umardi Rosdi, Heksa Priya Prasatya (Custom Cycling Team Indonesia), Mohd Rauf Nur Misbah (Selangor) and Ng Yong Li (Team Corbusier) just three kilometres from the finishing line of the 184km race to take the win.
The Terengganu team have, thus far, won all the legs of the competition. Terengganu had previously snatched the top spot on the podium through the Salleh brothers — Mohd Harrif winning in Kedah and Mohd Zamri in Kelantan.
“I had Umardi in the group with me so I knew I had a good chance. With three kilometres to go, I just went for it and Umardi controlled the pace well to hold off the other riders,” said Saiful.
Umardi sprinted for second place to edge Heksa at the finish line. Both finished 3:07 behind Saiful.
The 2010 Kuala Lumpur Sukma best sportswoman, Ju Pha Som Net of Perlis, won the 115km women’s race with an impressive time of 3’30:40.
Ju Pha denied Terengganu’s Nur Shuhada Zainal and Masziyaton Mohd Radzi of Kedah in a tense race to win in The next leg of the GP will be held in Lumut in November.
