Day for Penangites as Beng Hee and Wee Wern top TC
KUALA LUMPUR: National No. 1 Ong Beng Hee overcame a strong challenge from Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan to win the TC National Championship for the first time.
It was a good day for Penangites as national women’s No. 2 Low Wee Wern, still on a high after climbing to No.10 in the world recently, saw off Delia Arnold to also win her first national title.
The 32-year-old Beng Hee, who helped put Malaysia on the world squash map by winning the 1998 World Junior Championship, had never won the national title despite winning four Asian Championships and two Asian Games gold medals.
He made the final three times, but lost in 1997 to Kenneth Low, and to close friend Mohd Azlan Iskandar in 2010 and last year.
But Beng Hee was not to be denied again and went out firing on all cylinders against national No. 3 Nafiizwan. He took the first set 11-9 and, despite falling behind 1-5 in the second, came back strongly to win 11-8. He then wrapped it up by bagging the third 11-6.
“I’m really happy to win the national championship for the first time,” said a jubilant Beng Hee. “Nafiizwan gave me a good fight. This has been a good year and, hopefully, my form will carry into the Malaysian Open next week.”
Earlier, the 22-year-old Wee Wern also displayed fine form to see off a combative Delia 11-4, 10-12, 11-4, 11-5.
