No podium finish for Mariappan
LONDON: National senior powerlifter P. Mariappan could only finish eighth out of 13 participants in the 75kg weightlifting event at the 14th Paralympic Games yesterday.
The 54-year-old veteran powerlifter lifted 170kg in his third try in the event, which was won by Iran’s Ali Hosseini who recorded 225kg.
Mohamed Elelfat of Egypt (219kg) won the silver while Hu Peng of China took the bronze (213kg).
“Although I only managed 170kg, I am satisfied with my performance. My first try was disqualified by the jury although I felt I did not make any mistakes. That was rather dissapointing,” said Mariappan.
Mariappan has represented the country at the Paralympics in Seoul in 1988, Barcelona (1992), Atlanta (1996), Sydney(2000), Athens (2004) and Beijing (2008).
