Nafiizwan struggles to down India’s Siddarth
KUALA LUMPUR: National No. 2 Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan (pic) was made to slog for 112 minutes by India’s Siddarth Suchde in the first round of the qualifying event for the Tournament of Champions squash championships in New York on Wednesday.
The Terengganu-born Nafiizwan, ranked 33rd in the world, came back from a set down to win 9-11, 13-11, 11-5, 9-11, 11-6.
The Malaysian will face England’s Adrian Waller, the world No. 39, for a place in the main draw. The Englishman warded off a strong challenge from Egypt’s Omar Abdel Meguid to win 12-10, 9-11, 11-8, 11-9.
Mohd Asyraf Azan, the other Malaysian representative, failed to clear the first round.
The Negri Sembilan player put up a good fight against Canada’s Shawn Delierre before going down 5-11, 8-11, 12-10, 8-11 in 91 minutes.
National No. 1 Ong Beng Hee is in the main draw and will open his campaign against a qualifier in the first round.
In the women’s competition, Delia Arnold is also in the main draw. She will face sixth seed Amanda Sobhy of the United States in the opening round.
