MSSM to host inaugural Asian Schools Track and Field meet
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) will be hosting the inaugural Asian Schools Track and Field championships from Sept 17-25.
Rugby, the other sport to be contested at the Asian schools level for the first time, will be hosted by Hong Kong from July 19-23.
Deputy director-general in the Ministry of Education Sufa’at Tumin confirmed the decisions after launching the MSSM 2013 calendar.
MSSM will have 24 national schools events and will be involved in seven international events.
Besides rugby and athletics, the other Asian level meets are the Under-15 and Under-18 football tournaments which will be organised by Brunei in August and Sri Lanka in October respectively.
Ten-pin bowling will be held in Indonesia in March. The ASEAN Schools Games will be in Vietnam from June 22-July 2 while Malaysia will host the Little Athletics International with Singapore and Western Australia in the fray.
Sufa’at said that the track and field will be a good championship to look forward to as the athletes will come from countries like China, Japan, South Korea and the Middle East.
“It will be a very competitive meet. We must be ready to host it not just organisationally but in terms of competing in it.
“I hope our team will be prepared well in advance. When you have an international meet next year then the preparations must start now. Don’t leave it until the last minute,” said Sufa’at.
The Ministry has allocated RM6mil for organising all the MSSM meets this year.
Sufa’at said the amount was the same allocated last year.
The national MSSM meets will be held during the first and second term school holidays.
The Annual MSSM Sports Awards, to be held on Feb 27 in Kuala Lumpur, will kick start the MSSM calendar.
The 11 sports will be held during the first term holiday from March 23 are cross country (Kelantan), golf (Sabah), cricket (Penang), archery (KL), rugby (Perak), chess (Perak), squash (Malacca), aquatics (Selangor), table tennis (Kelantan), tennis (Sarawak) and rhythmic gymnastics (KL).
Football (Johor), bowling (Johor), handball (Kedah), softball (Negri), netball (Perlis), gymnastics (Selangor), badminton (Labuan), hockey (Malacca), volleyball (Terengganu), sailing (Terengganu), basketball (Penang) and sepak takraw (Kedah) will be held during the second term holiday from June 1.
The MSSM Track and Field championships will be hosted by Pahang from May 19-23.
